When it comes to the home entertainment systems there is nothing that can beat the Televisions. You call it the idiot box or anything that you might like, but the end of the day when you need some form of entertainment to relax after a busy day at work, a TV is the one that you can depend on. Now that we know how important a TV is in one’s life, choosing the right TV is also an important affair.
Today, there are many kinds of TVs to choose from like the LED TVs, LCD TVs, OLED TVs, and the Plasma TVs etc. However as the word goes, what is ruling the world today are the LED and the LCD TVs. What we are going to see now is how well the LED TVs are faring up with the conventional LCD TVs and which TV is ideal for providing the best kind of entertainment.
Principle behind the LED and LCD TV, how do they work
When you get down to the brass tacks, the LED TVs are nothing but the LED (Light Emitting Diode) backlit LCD TVs. To know the difference, we need to know how an LCD TV works. Have you ever tried to read a wristwatch in dark? Well, if you have got that opportunity you would know that one needs to press the tiny switch that lights the watch panel and you will be able to read the time. Somewhat a similar technology is applied here with the LCD TVs as well. Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) is nothing but the liquid captured between two layers of plates. However, you cannot see anything unless there is a light coming from behind that lights the screen and that light could be a LED or CCFL (Cold-Cathode Fluorescent Lamp).
Where LED TV scores high over LCD TV
Picture : As we talk about the picture quality, it is certainly better with the LED TV, however, there is no hard and fast rule that tells us the picture quality has to be better with the LED TV.
Color :LED TV definitely has an edge over the LCD TV where the display of colors is concerned, more so with the RGB-LED backlighting.
Thickness: Physical appearance is the first thing to catch one’s eye. The slim form factor of the TVs rules the industry especially when the people have been taking pride in how their TVs look in front of the onlookers. Here the LED TVs take the cake which starts at as thin as 1 in thickness. The technology involved in the LCD TVs, however, makes it difficult to maintain the slim form.
Dynamic Contrast: The dynamic contrast is basically the contrast between the darkest black and the brightest white signal that is fed into the screen. The higher the Dynamic contrast is the better. The RGB LED TVs score pretty well in this field showing truer blacks and whites.
Power Consumption :LED TVs are known for their efficient power consumption as compared to the CCFL backlighting used in the LCD TVs. The power saving is as good as 20-30%.
Where the LCD TV takes lead over the LED TV
Price: The TV manufacturers are demanding the high price for the LED TVs, especially for the RGB, LED TVs as according to them the LED backlight arrangement comes with three times the cost of the CCFL backlight technology. However, going forward, it is believed that the prices of the LED TVs will come down considerably making it the first choice for many as it is the price factor alone that might pull down the budget conscious people from buying the LED TVs.
